Faisal Samra : the political control over the visual production broadcast by the medias

“The principle is simple. If someone has a gun and they point it at you, either you steal theirs or you get one yourself. That’s what I believe. So with this body of work I bought a gun. Now we are equal.”

Faisal Samra is of Saudi origin, but he made his art studies in France and was a diploma from the School of Fine Arts in Paris . Is formed firstly as a consultant in graphic design at the Institute of the Arab World in Paris , then as stage designer for Saudi television . For a year, he taught at the university in Amman, Jordan and then returned to Paris where he benefited from an artist’s residence at the Cite Internationale des Arts, to which he is still involved today.
He traveled widely across the United States, the Middle East, Far East and the Maghreb, which leads to various social reflections that translated through his artwork. Faisal Samra expresses the mixing and merging of globalization not only on the iconographic level, but also at the technical level . In fact, he used both the digital photography, sculpture, painting, video performance , the same way as ancient and contemporary cultural references .

Faisal Samra is thus denounce the political control over the visual production Broadcast by the media to convey in larger masses, their ideas that have commercial and ideological purpose.

Faisal Samra has taken part in numerous group shows, including “Word Into Art” at the British Museum London,  or also “Languages of the Desert: Contemporary Arab Art from the Gulf States” Abu Dhabi, Paris and Kunstmuseum, Bonn, and “Traversée”, Paris, Cairo, Rabat and solo exhibitions in Middle-Eastern and European institutions. Today his work is a part of the collections of The British Museum, National Museum of Mexico City, Modern Art Museum of Cairo, Enrico Navarra in Paris, Saeb Eigner in London, Sheikha Paula Al Sabah in Kuwait, among others. Faisal Samra has participated in Biennial’s in Singapore and Cairo, and is a jury member of the Alexandria Biennale of Egypt.
